What the word actually means
Most outdoor lighting is trying to cover ground. Accent lighting starts somewhere else. It is selective by definition. One feature, chosen on purpose, with the surroundings left dark. The dark part is not an oversight. It is the reason the lit thing stands out.The concept is simple to say and hard to hold to. Choose a small number of things and let the rest of the property stay dark. The pull is always to light one more thing, and holding the line is what keeps the result looking designed.
What tends to earn it
Some things reward being lit and plenty do not. Texture is the best predictor: stone, brick, rough bark, a heavy timber, a carved door. Smooth surfaces reflect light without doing anything with it. Shape helps too: a tree with structure, an arch, a column, a gable peak.
Where accent plans fall apart
Plans go wrong when the list grows. One feature turns into six over a couple of conversations. Once the whole yard is bright, nothing is emphasized, and the plan is just illumination. A disciplined plan leaves most of the property dark on

Accent lighting and everything else on the property
On most properties it is part of a larger plan. The other layers are landscape, security and roofline work. Accent lighting is what keeps the result from looking merely lit.
Dimmer than you think
Accent fixtures are usually dimmer than people expect. Your eyes adjust to darkness, so a modest amount of light on a dark property does a great deal. You are highlighting something, not lighting a work area.
Two directions, two moods
Direction is a mood decision. Light from below is inherently dramatic, which is why it suits a column, a trunk or a stone face and flatters very little else. Downlighting from up in a tree or under a soffit imitates moonlight, so it feels natural and calm.
A maintenance note
Anything aimed at planting drifts out of alignment over the years. A shrub uplit perfectly when it went in will grow past the beam. Nothing is broken. The aim just needs a look. Re aiming is worth doing periodically.Aim gets checked the same way the design was made: by walking out at night and seeing what the light is doing.
