Start at the top edge
From the street, what you actually see at night is an outline, and the roof edge draws that outline. Nothing else on the house runs that far uninterrupted, and nothing else has the sky behind it. Light that line and the whole house resolves.Which is why almost every permanent lighting system starts at that line instead of being spread across the walls. It is the highest impact run on the building, measured by what it changes for what it takes.
The hardware, plainly
Roofline lighting is a color matched aluminum channel holding individual LEDs, mounted along the edge and left in place year round. The channel does two jobs at once: it holds the lights and it hides them. Matched to the trim, it reads as part of the house at noon.
Which lines get lit
Every plan begins at the main roofline, and works outward. After the main line come the gables, the dormers and the porch, each one judged on whether it helps. Outline everything and you end up with a shape and no depth, which is the usual mistake. The run itself is worth looking at closely on a finished job, because a straight line held over a long span is harder than it looks.
Daylight is the other half of the design
The hardware stays up, which makes daylight appearance part of what you are buying. That is why the color match matters more than it sounds. Mount it tight to the edge, match the trim, and hide the wiring, and nothing about the daylight view changes.
How it gets used
Once the run is in, it is a phone app and a color. Warm white on an ordinary Tuesday. Red and green in December. Orange in October. Team colors before a game. The setting that gets the most hours is the warm white, which surprises people who bought it for the holidays.
What makes one roofline a bigger job than the house next door
Rooflines
https://cristianjvip513.talesignal.com/posts/year-round-christmas-lights-why-the-ladder-can-stay-in-the-garage do not scale with house size. Length matters less than complexity. Complexity does more: a simple gable runs fast, and a roof with six changes of direction, three dormers and a turret does not. Two stories changes the job.
Where it fastens
Homeowners expect it to hang off the gutter, because that is how seasonal strands work. A permanent channel does not work that way. That distinction matters since a gutter is not a permanent mounting point, and hardware attached to one goes wherever it goes.
